Sky Tower, Amsterdam
Type: Residential / Micro-Lodging
Year: 2019
Status: Concept
Practice: TheWayWeBuild
The Challenge: Offshore wind turbines have a limited lifespan, while the Netherlands continues to designate new wind farm areas further into the North Sea. The question became: what happens to the towers when the turbines reach the end of their life?
The Concept: A design experiment that reimagines a retired wind turbine as a place to live rather than demolishing it. With the blades and machinery removed, a circular retreat sits atop the existing tower, containing two en-suite bedrooms, a spa, a bespoke curved kitchen and living space, a garden and a studio. Inspired by the Dutch skies of the Old Masters, the design embraces light and air.
